SPOTLIGHT
The Health & Safety Executive have set up an independant panel to scrutinize decisions where health and safety may be being used as an excuse to stop essentially sensible activities going ahead. The panel will look into complaints regarding the advice given by non-regulators such as insurance companies, consultants and employers and, quickly assess if a sensible and proportionate decision has been made. The panel say that health and safety is about managing real risks properly not being risk averse and stopping people getting on with their lives.
A British Safety Council survey reveals that 62% of employees had received little or no Health & Safety training. Annual costs for compensation and accidents is £250 per second, with cost to the overall economy being £1000 per second. The BSC believes that simple basic health & safety training should be given to every employee.
