Technical Specification

The Hayman Quantrill CBT courses are developed in Macromedia Authorware, the premier rich-media e-learning development software. The software is supremely stable, reliable and less prone to hardware conflicts. It can be delivered to connect to a SCORM or AICC-compliant International Standards (LMS) Learning Management System or your own database system if required. The courses are designed for ease of use and can be further modified with support for Accessibilty Legislation requirements, such as visually or hearing impaired students.

What you need to run the courses

Any PC with a live internet connection from the year 2000 to date will be suitable, but must have an enabled sound card with speakers or headset earphones and a minimum 256MB RAM. Earlier PC's require a minimum Pentium 2 processor.

Operating systems the courses will run on

Windows 95/98/ME/2000/Pro/XP/Vista

How you access the courses

Currently, the courses can be delivered in two different ways.

1. You can either download the course from our web server (Or ask for a copy on CD ROM) and install onto your PC. For Health & Safety Induction Training, this involves a download of approximately 15MB so ideally you will need a reasonably fast connection such as ISDN 64K or preferably ADSL 256K+ Broadband. Once you have installed the software you will need a live internet connection whilst taking the course to allow the course to update the records database on our database server. This connection can be a standard 56K dial-up modem.

2. The second method is entirely web based. You access the course through your web browser and the course runs through the Macromedia Authorware web player plug-in which is freely available from Macromedia as an installable download. As this version needs to download the web player approx. 2MB in size and then download the course at a further streaming 15MB, you will need a fast connection to use this method satisfactorily. Although it can be used with ISDN, ADSL Broadband is the preferred minimum connection.

All course recording is carried out on our database server which automatically dispatches reports and performance data to the designated managers.

How the course knows who you are

The student details are entered into the database by the designated manager through DatPort our secure web interface. Once registered and activated for one or more courses the student is given unique login details by the manager, and can then proceed to log in and take the relevant course

Other technical requirements

For the installed version of the course, all that is required is software install permissions on the PC. In the case where such permission is not granted to general PC users it will be necessary for the IT department to install the course whilst logged in at administrator level. The course accesses our database server through a designated port number which must be open and available from your PC through the companies Internet connection. Traffic from the URL www.hayman-quantrill.com would need passage through firewalls, e-mail spam filters, Servers and proxy servers.

For the online version, the Authorware web player requires permissions to write to certain directories on the hard drive, again it might be necessary to enlist the help of the company IT department. For the streaming content it is necessary that the firewall does not block the download segments of the online course. The firewall may not recognise or allow certain Authorware file types. They are: -

.aas    .aam    .x32    .u32  - these file types would need to be allowed through the firewall.

Database Communication

Both versions of the course transmit and receive data from the remote database on the Hayman Quantrill Servers. This is done via a dynamic data web page and the data travels on the standard port 80 which is usually open for internet browsing. We can supply a small test file to your IT department so they can test database connectivity prior to download and installation of the course

Email Reporting & Alerts

Our system generates automatic e-mail alerts and monthly reports to the managers. It is important that Hayman Quantrill.com domain is allowed through any spam filters. We can work with your IT department to ensure this is in place prior to anyone taking the course.
